Nice lady I met on the subway this morning.
LARGE. About 6 feet tall. Rather ahem, full-bodied.
Carrying large amounts of “stuff”, luggage of various sorts. Hairdo, large. Very large and imposing do, comprised of projectile bun of rasta braids.
Read the paper with true elan. Grabbed AM New York, poised it on the overhead horizontal pole, both hands positioning the pages of the paper, while she read with regal pose, head arched backward with dignity — simultaneously flogging me with her luggage and braining me with her projectile hair.
I hate to always play the role of curmudgeon, but I will say this about NOP: while he is an eloquent writer, I do not recognize the Brooklyn of which he speaks. I am not denying that the world he describes existed, but I will say that it was not the mainstream. I will even go so far to say that I believe the high majority of Brooklyn folks from that time would not recognize the world he describes.
Most folks who moved out of Brooklyn at that time went to places like Levittown and Masspequa, if they were working-class, or Great Neck and Garden City, if they were better-off. They did not migrate to Park Ave.

I’ve been here for years but just noticed that I can’t find a search function on Brownstoner. Am I missing something or is it possibly not searchable?
You are right. it does not work.
Lech, safe to assume you don’t subscribe to the axiom that one attracts more bees with honey than with vinegar?
I swear I don’t see it. Could that be because I have ad blocker on?

Carol, try the “Search Brownstoner” field for starters.

In my next life, I want to be a Navy Seal.
In my last life, I was a seal.

That is such a bunch of hippie bullcrap.
