  1. I love NOP’s posts.

He paints pictures of people and their time, with words, almost Rockwellian, they are so vivid. Yeah, it helps me personally, that he’s talking about places I’m familiar with, but that’s a perk, not a necessity to his stories. His last story was just the best, talking about his father visiting his first apartment in the Heights.

His story of his Brooklyn is unique to him, and part of the thousands of stories of growing up here. It doesn’t matter that it is not the typical story, or a story of me and my people, or a way of life that is familiar to me. If his family, or he made good, and ended up on Park Ave, that’s as valid as the good life for someone else in Levittown.

I can’t fully understand what it was like for a Frank McCourt to grow up in Ireland, or Amy Tan to grow up in a Chinese family on the West Coast. But their talent allows me to be there in their lives and share in their experiences. NOP has that same talent, and I’m glad he shares it with us every once in a while.

  2. Benson, that’s great that your father is going down to San Antonio to see his Navy buddies.

My father was in the Navy too, but he never attended any reunions. He stays in touch with all of his classmates though which is wild. He is 88 and used to go to High School reunions and college reunions and write to his old friends. When we were kids, we used to drive up to his college in Vt for reunions. But same thing with him. Most of these buddies are gone now.
