Yes, the ‘copters from the top of the PanAm Bldg were fanTAStic! You didn’t actually feel any movement in the copter – it was sort of like sitting in a Disney attraction seeing the ground fall away beneath you. Really, really neat!!
It was also very classy of Obama to both mention him in his announcement and to ask him. But the Obama haters won’t be persuaded anyway. Some people don’t want national unity.
And I will say GB has been a class act since his retirement.I wish he would come for the 10th- NYC owes him that much.
Yes Biff, the helicopter shuttle from the Pan Am building was shut down when the landing strut for one of the helicopters failed, it toppled on its side, and one of the rotors separated and decapitated some guy on the street who was just crossing the street on his way to work.
Of course, traffic disruptions suck when one is in need of a cop, firefighter or ambulance…
Regarding copters, as I posted before, there used to be a heliport on the top of the Pan Am (MetLife) building, which closed in the ’70s after one of the helicopters crashed. I think they had shuttles to JFK up until then.
I once took an intelligence photography class in San Diego. We were given an assignment to go back to our respective bases and take photos of stuff. I came back with pictures of ships or something like that. There were a bunch of guys in the class from SEAL Team 5. They came back with pictures of high explosives.
Benson I was stationed in Dam Neck VA for a while right next the the Seal Team 6 base. I used to go running down the beach and through the roads in their compound. There were a lot of live fire exercises.
At the time I had orders to go to BUD/S, which is basic SEAL training in Coronado CA. I was conditioning myself to go to BUD/S. I did a lot of running up and down the beach in combat boots. I used to ask the SEALs about what they do but they would just deny that it was a SEAL base at all (though we all knew it was of course).
I think George Bush made the right decision by not accepting President Obama’s invitation. This is President Obama’s moment – the spotlight should be on him. I understand the appeal to national unity, but frankly I don’t think the Bush-haters would be persuaded by the sight of President Obama and GW together at Ground Zero.

I loved the water shuttle to LaGuardia!!!! It’s really too bad they got rid of it.
