Agreed on the calming (NOT) effect on cats. My old cats would have figured out in a heartbeat how to jump that thing and get at the fish. It would be an agitating thing with them for sure.
The King’s Speech is a white person’s feelgood movie. It’s all about therapy, which only white people believe in, and the main character is a really sensitive King, which appeals to white people’s silly idealism.
It definately is a feel good movie, I don’t know if it is because of therapy, but the class thing, the class angle is very, very feel good, designed to make foot shuffling regular people feel good about an ordinary poor guy being as powerful as a king, or at least empowering a king. It has the appeal of Cinderella or any of those ordinary people having access and power over royalty. And the idea of royalty being fragile is appealing too.
ha ha lechacal,
I think a weekly “critic’s corner” on this blog would be a good addition. I can only imagine the varied opinions!
donatella,
Many, like your friend, believe that greatness or brillance has some madness attached to it. I don’t think it’s true though for the large majority of high achievers though.
I’m more in line with the 99% perspiration/ 1% inspiration philosophy.People who I’ve seen and worked with who are great at what they do are exceptional in their ability to concentrate and keep at something for a long period of time, more than most would before giving up.
There’s also a theory of 10,000 making the rounds in psychology circles.
That to become expert at something, one needs to apply about 10,000 hours of effort to that endeavor, which works out to about 5-7 years of full time effort. Add the 1% inspiration after that and you have genius.
Yikes,
I’m not seeing darkness over here in South Brooklyn yet,
if you see a greenish hue, watch out. They say that’s the sign of a Tornado.
Oh man, it’s that weird scary light over here…getting really dark…dark dark clouds coming in from the West.
“I would love to get a fish talk”
bxgrl, fish can’t talk!!!
Getting very dark in midtown quickly.

denton — as i advised legion, check out the flow chart on slate about Black Swan. You’ll know for sure whether you would like it or hate it.
“Sorry, CGar, got confused”
There’s a lot of that going around, Slopey.
