The thought of Donald Trump as a viable candidate for president is rather frightening. His willingness to spout utter nonsense to appeal to people he ordinarily wouldn’t have come anywhere near him in real life, while entertaining, shows a cynicism and contempt for this country that is not what we need in this world.
His personal life would ordinarily repulse the religious right. It’d be interesting to see how he’d handle that, and how they’d handle him.
He’s totally unfit, anyway, on so many levels. But there are those who think he’s cool, and would vote for him because he’s on tv. These are also the people who could probably be convinced that Arnold Schwartzenegger was born in the US, if he decided he wanted to run. They would have no trouble accepting that, yet someone who they don’t like and was born here has to have press conferences with his damn birth certificate in hand. What a world.
Slopey- sometimes i think he simply wants to sound as unlike Trump, Palin, Bachman et al as possible so perhaps he treis too hard. Still, it’s a sad day when someone like Trump can be considered a serious contender without doing anything more than talk like a birther.
bx — I think there is room for Obama to make adjustments without pandering to the LCD or being something other than he is. When he wanted to, Clinton was very good at articulating principles in an intelligent manner in a way that resonated. I certainly think Obama can do it and has done it. But he needs to get better at it.
I dunno, slopey. I do agree with MM on this. I guess what we think is tone deaf varies with the listener but when it comes to people like Trump, the “common touch” seems to be more about pandering to the lowest common denominator.

rob- and I’ve never met anyone who is so defensive when they are taken to task for making asinine comments on a regular basis. So put up or shut up.
