When I lived on Schermerhorn my upstairs neighbor bought 5 miniature sharks, a tank, the whole works, including some conditioner she was told to put in the water to make it fish ready. She did and all of a sudden ashy-black flakes started forming all over the tank, then the sharks started leaping out. She called my in hysterics and I ran upstairs. We managed to get 4 of them back in the tank. The fifth we found in the back of the fireplace, dead. We never figured out what happened but when she bought another package of the conditioner and used it, it was fine.
donatella, it’s not the “shock” of the temp that requires that water sit overnight but the fact that the exposure to sunlight “burns off” the chlorine in the water. It’s the chlorine that’s toxic to them.
When I had my 55 gal aquarium I kept two 5 gal water cooler bottles full of tapwater for a day or two. Get a one gallon clear water bottle and use that.
Then why would you buy them? The problem with pets is they live too long. If someone engineered a dog or a cat that would die in exactly one year or two years or something I would probably get it.
I am pleased to announce two new additions to the Brooklyn Brownstone world, Oscar and Serafina, two lovely gold fish who are now living with me in my brownstone. Serafina is white with an orange blob on her head and Oscar is a wildman orange boy. I bought them at the shop dibs suggested, since I had to go to midtown last night.
Some fun facts about goldfish:
–They can live up to 20 years
–If handled properly, they can grow to the size of a softball (ewww….???)
–They should be fed only every other day and then only as much as they can eat in a minute.
–I need to change the water every other day, letting fresh water sit to get to room temp so as not to shock them. Also, I need to add a water conditioner to neutralize floride.
lechacal had a hacking cough for awhile. maybe he is to blame

If *rob*’s post was the smartest, jackal, this has to be the dumbest.
