  1. Regarding Afghanistan, gradually we are morphing into a Petraeus Iraq-style, counter-insurgency effort. The military has been hammering away to try to do this and initially Obama was resisting this social worker/nation building approach there (country too big, too much of a mess, crazy crook in charge, etc., all we want is a counter-terrorism approach) and our approach was going to be an effort to identify groups harboring Al Queda and knock them out. (Biden, the guy everybody loves to make fun of, was the stand up fighter for this quick, dirty approach). Against this was Petraeus and co., pushing for an Iraq-style effort. Gradually it looks like Obama fell into this hole. One of the reasons I was hot on Obama was that I thought he would resist this shit, that the terrible mistake that was Iraq would be wound down and we would get our troops out of there and out of Afghanistan.

But no. This is a great disappointment to me. To understate it.

  2. Ok, when Brooklyn Couch enters the room I leave, as my stomach isn’t strong enough to listen to his ranting.

I’m disappointed in a lot of things this administration is doing, but I can guarantee without a shred of doubt, that it’s a thousand times better than if McCain and the Repugs were in charge. Talk about clueless.

One of my biggest disappointments with Obama is that he DID try to negotiate with the Republicans, from day one. They ignored him, tried to get around him, sat on their hands and said NO to everything, and are now running around saying “he never negotiated with us.” Well it takes 2 to negotiate. The reason a lot of programs, have gone nowhere is because he wasted time trying to be bipartisan, and he negotiated himself down to nothing. He should have been the bastard they call him anyway, and rammed his agenda down their throats. At least they’d have a legit reason to hate him. They don’t want negotiation anyway, because they have no good ideas and no plans except opposing anything the president suggests.

  3. “Face it: Our President is a Demagogic devil with a voice that lulls woman and some men into submission. ” Nothing like a well thought out, logically put argument. Isn’t there some exorcism you have to go to?

Cgar- I may have married you for real estate but it quickly became true love 🙂

    DH- you’re the best!

  4. On the Ryan plan:

It does not take Medicare away.
It addresses the reality that Medicare is set to become
    insolvent by 2017.
That’s the Congressional Budget Office’s estimate, not mine.

    That being the case,
Does it not make sense to start addressing this problem now?
The Ryan plan does not seek to eliminate Medicare, it
seeks to introduce free market competition into the healthcare process. Something which is already being done in the form of ADVANTAGE MEdicare plans.

The plan continues the current level of yearly reimbursement for medicare beneficiaries, around $15,000 dollars per annum. In addition, low income seniors will qualify for subsidies to increase their entitlement.

This plan will only effect those seniors who are qualified for Medicare after the projected date of Medicare insolvency.

It is becoming obvious that the Obama Healthcare plan will not “save” medicare as he had hoped it would. Someone already posted how out of control the Medicaid expansion alone is turning out to be.

  5. Sorry, I have to disagree. I know a family of 4 that have been on welfare for a solid 10 years more or less. They do nothing, are not required to do anything. No physical or mental issues here whatsoever. Just plain lazy and they have housing, food, etc. And, don’t say it can’t be, I KNOW this for a fact (the kids laugh about it, this is what they are learning). Oh, they pull in a few bucks off the books for their cigs, etc. But we are all paying for them.

“I wonder if Obama has ever engaged in a serious negotiation?”

benson, admittedly I skip almost all political posts, so forgive me if this is all a case of first impression for me, but, ummmmm, you do realize this is equally true, if not moreso, of the Republicans, right?

Ryan has put a proposal on the table and Obama won’t negotiate.

  7. Paul Ryan is a serious man who has proposed something that would improve our lot markedly. The worse criticism of Ryan’s is that it doesn’t go far enough. But lets adopt it, and then worry about the next horror, Social Security.

On the other hand, Obama’s plan will save as much money as Obamacare will: it will cost more than it saves.

Face it: Our President is a Demagogic devil with a voice that lulls woman and some men into submission. He is Jimmy Carter on steroids. He is taking us towards the cliff.
