I see I can’t leave the OT for a minute without some sort of economic/social/political fight breaking out.
In answer to the question on spending for Defense.
It’s a hard answer but one based in the nasty reality of geo-political struggles:
The US stands as the sole “superpower” due to it’s military strength.
It’s also the reason why the US Dollar is the reserve currency of the world (for now).
It’s also the reason why the current President can continue to spend without regard for reality, secure in the knowledge that the Greenback is backed by nuclear submarines, aircraft carriers, ICBM’s,military satellites and that secret EMP weapon that I’ve mentioned before but won’t get into futher here.
The world fears the military strength being weilded by the US, no matter how inept the leader of this nation is.
Now, go ahead and cut spending drastically,
let the submarine fleet rust, the air-craft carriers go into disrepair, the satellites fall out of orbit and the ICBM’s decay and watch how fast the vultures around the world start to circle around our carcass.
Starting with the US Dollar!
By the way, I’m for getting out of Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya now. Leave behind strategic outposts and aircraft carriers to remind the enemy whoo’s in charge though.
“If more people on welfare were made to do at least a modicum of work for it there’d be far fewer people on welfare.”
Recognizing that many people on welfare are not able to work for any number of reasons (physical, mental, etc.), I agree with this as to able-bodied individuals.
Dave, CGar is right, and both of you are forgetting that welfare doesn’t come free. Able bodied people are required to work, or they don’t get benefits. I have no problem with that concept, although it still isn’t perfect.
At some point, gas and food prices will be sufficiently high, and the job market sufficiently dead that even the fake socialists of the UWS and Park Slope will be scared enough to shut up and get a Republican elected to the Whitehouse (and flip the Senate). Maybe then I will have the nerve to rip up and burn the Obama sign in the back of my journalist/brother-in-law’s car in the South Slope.
“I wonder if Obama has ever engaged in a serious negotiation?”
benson, admittedly I skip almost all political posts, so forgive me if this is all a case of first impression for me, but, ummmmm, you do realize this is equally true, if not moreso, of the Republicans, right?
“That was exactly my point that started this debate: his comments with respect to the Ryan plan. The president invites Ryan to a front-row seat at his “speech” on the deficit. Rather than using this speech to acknowledge that Ryan has made a serious first move forward towards solving our deficit, and then presenting his counter-proposal, he berates Ryan as an “accountant” and offers no real policy proposals.”

MM, in fairness to dave, he did agree with my post and said that’s what he meant.

Napalm the poppy fields and get the hell out.
I’d be in favor of that but how long does that last? One season?

If you haven’t, watch this, it’s delicious and true:

It’s very confusing to find myself agreeing with dave so often today.
**Someday this war is gonna end**
Benson, the narcissist in him won’t allow it.

shitty change is not better than no change.
