I’ve never been a big fan of wallpaper either, jackal, but I’ve seen it done that way, and the way the ladies describe, and it does look nice. dave’s suggestions for wainscoting or panelling or bead board look nice, too. Hate to agree with the ewife, but if you’re going to use tile, it looks best if you tile the entire lower half of the wall.

In terms of exposing them to a different thought, life, arena, experience? I think she did say that but also that it isn’t necessary to appreciate ‘the person’. You get some of the grooviness, even if you don’t hear the stories.
You know what’s a good project for a new home owner?
Planting a tree.
You pick out a nice spot. Consider a good tree for the site.
Will it be flaming red in fall or bright pink in spring?
How tall will it get and how wide?
It’s a great way to mark the passage of time,
especially with young children.
If I had the space, I’d plant a Purple Beech Tree.
Great looking trees, but they can be huge with trunks 5 feet in diameter. Smooth grey bark with deep red/purple leaves throughout the spring and summer.
What looks really nice is a chair rail with “panelling” below. You needn’t make floating raised panels, just frame in the panel sections with 1 x 6″ baseboard and 1 x 4″ styles (vertical pieces) and a 1 x 4″ piece on top with a cap. Then frame the open panel sections with a trim molding. This all requires lots of miter cuts but really looks great in a dining room, especially. I did it in P-Town.

Lech- what my ehusband said (except the wallpaper goes above the chair rail. I wouldn’t do a line of tile- if you do that, you really should tile the entire wall below the dividing line.

If you can hang wallpaper right, it looks great but if you can’t it looks awful and should be done professionally.
It’s always worth paying a premium for anything well hung.
For a more 18th century look, and much cheaper and easily done is to buy MDF and “bead” an edge horizontally midway in the wainscoting.
