  1. There’s an incredible amount of waste in ALL departments and branches of the government. it goes way beyond employee salaries and pension expense.

The Democrats stubbornly refusing to move off the low end of cutting is just that, stubborness.

  2. Another way to look at it bfarwell:

There is a room neither of us has never been to.

There might be a red pen in that room.

    Neither of us knows.

There is some important consequence to whether the red pen exists.

You say you refuse to believe that a red pen exists in that room unless you get in and look at it.

I say, for whatever reason, that I choose to believe that there is a red pen in that room, and to act accordingly.

We can both be right. Thus our positions are not inconsistent.

    You will definitely be right.

I may or may not be right.

But you are right by doing nothing. I do something and will be proven either right or wrong.

“1/0 is ‘undefined’ because it doesn’t work. In the same way that me levitating doesn’t make any sense and doesn’t work. Not being able to divide my zero doesn’t mean the concept of zero is inconsistent with the laws of mathematics.”

    A ha!

bfarwell, prepare to have your core beliefs questioned!
You just stated that 1/0 is undefined because it does not work.
But you see, IT DOES WORK.
It works for mathematical functions all the time.
As I stated, the basis of calculus is being able to say :
“well it approaches zero, but we don’t have enough time left in the universe to wait for it to get there,
so lets just call it zero.”

Substitute faith for an approach to a belief in something and you begin to see my point.
Don’t let the peanut gallery here distract you from your quest for truth. Many here see my rants as nutty, I just see them as right.
I put that last line in there just to irritate.
    muhahahahah.

  4. Slashing government payrolls is all nice, but it will do close to nothing in the overall federal spending picture, especially if you leave the military out of those cuts.

Not to say that it should not be done, but much more than cutting federal employee expenses is needed if we ever want to see a balanced budget.

  5. BOTD is the church where my mexican bf’s daughter was baptised. if it weren’t for attending that I never would have realized the architectural wonders of bed Stuy and moved to brooklyn. And because of that you are all graced by my presence on brownstoner.

The Lord works in mysterious ways.

  6. bfarwell, the test for inconsistency is whether both people can be right.

If I say something is a circle and you say it’s a square, we can’t both be right.

If I say the answer to a math problem is Pi/2 and you say it’s 2Pi, we can’t both be right.

But if I say the ocean is full of fish and you say you believe the biggest fish is a tuna, we *can* both be right.

And if I say I refuse to believe anything that cannot be proven, and you say you choose to have faith in something that cannot be proven, those things are not inconsistent.

I think you are getting yourself tripped up by the fact that religion too often promotes ideas that are in fact inconsistent with the physical world (Genesis, for example). I am making a much more limited observation that one person’s faith in and of itself is not inconsistent with another person’s insistence on actual knowledge.
