  1. etson – okay, that makes sense, given your political views.

this cutting of spending wouldn’t be a problem if it was something everyone could agree on – like, errrrr, defense maybe?

  2. arent you afraid some psycho is going to be on the other side and instead of poking their penis out they stab you in the face with a knife? i will never understand gay mans

    *rob*

Or worse, cut off your dick!!!!

  3. “but isn’t this taking “money” out of the pockets of one group and putting it into the hands of another?”

To me, it’s more not taking money out of some people’s pockets and not putting it into the hands of another. Not being facetious with that, I do think there’s a fundamental difference.
But that’s a question of politics rather than economics, and relates to the debate DIBS was raising on the efficiency of government spending.
I was really just trying to make the the point that there was no net *cost* to the economy (again with a few caveats that work both ways), just a question of the “right” allocation between government vs. the rest of the economy.

  4. “Benson: The issue at hand is how effective our social safety net is, both in terms of its cost-effectiveness AND its effectiveness in improving the life of the poor.”

Yes it is- but the solution is not to destroy the safety net. Yes, plenty of people will abuse the system, but the majority don’t. What happens to them? What’s your alternative?

And the whole, the government has no right to my taxes is ridiculous. If you want the privilege of living in this country or doing business in it, there must be a reason. Well those reasons have to be paid for. Yes- there’s plenty of government waste and that must be attended to, but I wouldn’t trust private business to do the right thing either. Whereas at least the government is by the people, for the people, and of the people, business is by me, for me and of me me me. GE is a perfect example. It’s 2 completely different mindsets and if we don’t find a way of making them work together, we can kiss this country goodbye.

and legion, “I understand you lean far left, but I ask you not to confuse your political leanings with the reason our economy is in the state it’s in.”- first of all, I am center left, not far left. And secondly, pot, kettle, black.
