The search for extraterrestrial life is basically pointless for that reason. Other than detecting something (OK, big whoop), communication will never take place on a time scale that is meaningful to hue-mons.
If we do become aware of some other intelligent life form, assuming it isn’t visiting us at the time, there will never be any communication with that other life form in our lives. It would go something like this:
Earthling 1: “Hey we are getting a signal from that planet and it’s ordered in some way that makes us think it’s from an intelligent life form!!!”
Earthling 2: “Cool how far away is the planet?”
Earthling 1: “1,000 light years”
Earthling 2: “Awesome, send them a message!!!”
[1,000 years later]
Alien 1: “Hey we are getting a signal from that planet and it’s ordered in some way that makes us think it’s from an intelligent life form!!!”
Alien 2: “Cool how far away is the planet?”
Alien 1: “1,000 light years”
Alien 2: “Well fuck it then. They’ll all be dead by the time they hear back from us. Drink?”
legion- with billions and billions of planets and stars in the universe, I always though it would be much more likely we are not alone, than that we are.Only wish I am around when we finally meet life from another planet (and hopefully it doesn’t eat us, melt us or shred us). 😉
This is true.
One of the Space Shuttle missions did a scan of the Earth for the last “Extinction Event” crater and it was found off the Western coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.
A 120 mile wide asteroid crater that is believed to be the cause of the Jurassic extinction.
Some good news, astronomists recently discovered billions of new potential planets in our own galaxy, the Milky Way.
Perhaps we are not alone. :o)
dibs,
…well many people who describe alien abductions do tell stories of horny alien probes. Maybe that’s their way of being friendly. 😉
bxgrl,
I posted a link last week to a scientist publishing his findings on fossilized bacteria inside meteorites. Anything is possible.

Dave, I like you attitude about the aliens, i.e., Fuck ‘um!

Just more places to “pin” on my map of conquests.

g10, exactly why it’s so easy for kanye, ross, and others to dominate now – competition is weak
legion- a sobering reminder that we don’t own the planet- it owns us.
