Um, I prefer to be in awe of reality. Like the reality that I don’t want to have a phone call with someone if I’m dead and the next 40 generations are also dead before the other side of the call hears me say “hi.”
“If we do become aware of some other intelligent life form” —
I’m lost to which intelligent life form we are aware of now. Am sure you don’t mean humans.
with that attitude, Lech, why do anything? We’re all going to die so why bother? Why create a Gothic cathedral to last generations since we’ll die before it’s finished? It’s only meaningless if you think your generation is the be all and end all- in the timeline of the human race, each of us is a blip. But your kids and grand kids and great great great (etc) grand kids might be around to see it- and science will keep progressing, so who knows what forms of communication we will use in the future?
Besides- I don’t know about your brain, but mine likes to be filled with knowledge and remains in awe of the universe.
1000 light years to get a message to another planet?
No wonder the US Postal Service is going out of business.
Used to be you could get a letter anywhere in 3 days for the price of a stamp!
We are on a little island in a little solar system, completely alone for all relevant purposes. If other life exists it really doesn’t matter at all. It’s like being stuck on an island in the middle of the pacific ocean without a boat and with nothing but bottles and pieces of paper. Sure you can send out a message, but it’s unlikely it will ever reach a life form that can read it or even recognize it as meaningful, and even if it does you’ll never know, so what’s the point?
best time to hike (other than autumn foliage) up there is 1st part of june when mountain laurel in bloom
“The earthquake moved the earth 4″ on its axis.â€
