I always get up for pregnant women and elderly people. I have started to offer my seat with a woman with a newborn in a carrier, but not if the baby is in a stroller
and I NEVER give up my seat to a parent with a 5 year old – too bad – my father would make me get UP at 5 if someone else needed the seat more! b/c I was well-behaved and I wouldn’t make a scene if I couldn’t sit in a seat – I feel like parents look at you to offer your seat for their 5 year old in fear that the 5 year old turns into Chucky and goes buck on the train screaming and acting out!
You never know what type of crazy you’ll run into for sure. But I still blame their parents. Respect is something you initially learn from your folks. I am always amazed (though I don’t know why) at the stories I hear of kids back-talking their parents, even physically fighting them. If you don’t respect your parents, you aren’t likely to respect a random adult on the street/subway/bus. Terrible cycle.
Dave, like the supreme court would, I’ll dispense with your comment the easiest way possible – overturning Roe v. Wade would leave the question to the states and NY state isn’t going to ban abortion.
Snaps! – me and my husband complain all the time and then as you said – sit there and gloat like well at least we were taught the right way to be…..
But I am just wondering if it’s not even these kids’ parents but the kids themselves. Kids today just seem more rude and realllly not afraid of an adult. I also find that many of the kids on the train that act up are usually in Special Ed -so unless you are prepared to get into a shouting match or a fist fight – sometimes it’s best to just ignore the craziness.
rob, that’s a fine line you walk when you give up your seat for someone who “looks” pregnant. Most of the women on the A train “look” pregnant but actually aren’t.
I actually do see a lot of people give up seats for the elderly on the A train though. I offered last night and she said no, she was getting off soon and got off at my stop. She was at least 70.

Ok, the hamster thing… GEEZ!
Who throws hamsters?!?
LOL oddly, Martin Sheen threw Jodie Foster’s hamster into the fireplace in A Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane (best movie ever!)

“Is DH “Charlie Sheen”?”
“no – i don’t make fake names.”
So . . . Dirty Hipster is your real name, then. Who knew?
(I really don’t know why I’m so snarky today.)
