Manned space flight is almost entirely about national pride, and has been from the beginning.
There is some good science that gets done in space, but almost all could be done for far less money on earth.
Military missiles have been almost completely separate form manned flight, with the exception of the earliest Mercury missions.
Satellite launching has almost always been separate from manned flight, with the exception of the Space Shuttle, which was poor vehicle for the purpose and got out of the business after Challenger.
I agree with jessi and m4l,
gotta have a backup plan or a set amount of funding ready in order to take the risk.
Sometimes it makes sense to take on a less tasking position in order to work on the “big idea” in your spare time. It’s just being practical, especially if you have many financial responsibilities.
I hear you M4L. Going for broke is never an option. Looking at a realistic risk/reward ratio is part of the thinking process. You gotta stay alive. Just like trading.

gaaaaaaaaaaaah! i’d sooner rather live in the amityville house or the nightmare on elm street house than a nurses residence turned into apartments! talk about horror!
Donatella, advice from me is NOT that you shouldnt try combining the 2 but rather to know going in that the odds are low. I’ve been trying real hard to start a biz and step one is assessing can & how do I survive if it fails (ie as I know most small retail biz fail – low success rate). the payoff is juicy hence I’m willing to risk it but unlike many others, I go in fully aware the odds are against me.

I try to work in areas that I am vaguely interested in, but 99% of my motivation for working is the money.
