  1. “AS a society, we need the three “C’s”:

    compassion
    consideration
    common sense

    with those everyone is ok”

Well said Gem. Compassion and consideration equals tolerance.

  2. (Not to say that there aren’t others on the OT who help people they are not related to. Sorry if anyone feels left out! BSM and MM are not just looking to boost the resale value of their homes when they organize landmarking and other neighborhood efforts.)

  3. Have to disagree with you on this one, JB. Some of the most heinous crimes committed in the history of civilization have been by religious people. Think Inquisition. Think Crusades. Think 9-11.

religion never stopped anyone from being inhuman- what it did for them is convince them that G-d was on their side so it was ok to kill whomever they defined as non-believers. I would venture to guess that atheists, who tend more toward humanism, act in ways that are for the greater good of everyone- not just the anointed few.

From an anthropological point of view, societies form based on need and practicalities- i.e., a cooperative community is a healthier, safer community. religious folk tend to believe that they are right in their own particular set of beliefs and therefore must impose it on everyone else because G-s mandates it. They seem to have forgotten the ethical systems religions have built, in favor of forcing their views on the rest of us.

  4. But Jessi, Arkady doesn’t have kids and she’s helped many who are not in her family. Likewise (just an example I can think of on the OT) Cobble. Social values are not just family values.
