I don’t think unions are the root of all evil. I’ve stated my case about what’s wrong with unions, my point at 1:00 being the primary one. I’ve never heard anyone on here argue against me that I was wrong on that issue.
The other issue is that union retirement does not abide by the Rule of 80, like the private sector does. that needs to be changed.
Also, like everyone else, they should be required to pay some of their health insurance and contributions to their retirement.
m4l, that’s the basis of my primary rants about unions. if the unions would give up 3-6% of salary, those layoffs wouldn’t need to take place.
I think the level of intelligence is far lower in the public sector and here’s a perfect example of it.

The unions in Wisconsin have offered to make such concessions. Neverthless rather than negotiate, the governor there, for political reasons, is determined to break the unions by stripping away their right to bargain collectively. It won’t work.
Clearly the Wisconsin unions too are opposed by condescending and ignorant people who strangely claim to possess a higher level of intelligence.
I know government workers are getting laid off, but from what I have seen it has mostly been using the “last in, first out” system. Therefore, ones who have been on the job the 3 or 5 or however many years are still safe.
Even if their position is eliminated, in most systems they can bump someone with less seniority in a different position.
Scott, to be fair and mindful of the current times, gov workers are getting terminated at a decent clip now – given the budget gaps. so “job for life” is more hollow now
I would call most government positions a “job for life,” at least once you get past the 3-5 year mark.
In almost every government position it takes gross incompetence to be fired or laid off after that point.
ENY…as I told others last week, it’s not their rights to collective bargaining. if you don’t know the details, best not to chime in.
It’s about bargaining rights with respect to CERTAIN issues, wages NOT being one of them.

dave – just curious.
do you really think things are okay the way they are now?
do you really think unions are the root of all evil in our society today and if they were eliminated everything would be hunky dory?
Last in, first out is EXACTLY what the problem is. Nothing is based on merit.
STUPID
