I admire the futile attempts that bxgrl, jessie, MM & others make at trying to beat some measure of common sense (and compassion) into the right side of this board. It’s painful to see dibs et al, sitting pretty on their financial bandwagons, denigrate working people, public workers and most of those less fortunate than themselves. Government is not the problem given the enormous challenges it works under…the military budget alone could be cut to the point of eliminating our deficit in a decade.
Can’t you guys see that every single thing the Repubs do is against the poor, the vulnerable, women (particularly if poor), improving the environment, dealing with climate change, and in general, doing anything except making sure the rich are protected?
denton: statement about silence on higher taxes, I think there have been polls where a lot of people would support them.
“Why should I pay more money when the government hasn’t shown they can spend what they have efficiently.”
How do you measure efficiency when you’re talking about help to the poor? I think of this single mom I met whose husband left her after learning that their daughter had mental retardation. She couldn’t work because she had to stay home with her daughter. What is she supposed to do? You will have to continually give her (and her daughter) money for a very long time. Is there an efficient way to do this? Don’t let the abuse of a few ruin a program for the rest – same thing with the union stuff.
“It’s the have-nots who have the guns that voted in the people who want to do less for them.”
This is a dangerous and anti-democratic line of argument. The idea that people don’t know their ‘real’ interests, but that some kind of elite does was very important in the theories that inspired many totalitarian regimes.
I was reading something written in the 1950’s along those exact lines over the weekend.
g10, $20 a week times a few hundred million people can have a stimulative effect.
Don’t forget we are still in a big recession. The great thing about cutting taxes for the working classes is that they SPEND it. Cut them for dibs and he puts it in TAX FREE BONDS… lol.
Denton – I understand that argument as well -but it’s a circle jerk either way – but like you said people like DIBS are then saving their tax cuts and putting that money away, whereas if he was forced to pay taxes that money would go into gov’t programs to help everyone…..
“what did you do at work today dh?”
-“same thing i do everyday pinky, try to save the world!!” (on the OT)
Can we go back to discussing oatmeal?
