Denton -yes but not 18K – most asst jobs start at 25K with OT – trust me I know
when I started at the record label back in 1998 as an asst – I started at $23K with OT – so I was making about $40K back in the late 90’s
no way they are offering 18K – THAT’s below the poverty line in NYC and if they are offering that to college grads as a starting salary than that’s disgraceful
“what is the proper age for a child to be weened off breast milk?”
“Have you ever BEEN to Billings, Montana? Oh, sure. Woman in the audience was breast-feeding her kid. Oh, c’mon! Kid was 15 years old! Wasn’t hers, thank God. If you have a choice between landing in Billings, Montana, or going down in a plane, go down in that G*d damn plane.”
Denton – taht’s something Rob would say – and some of it is true !
wow – WAIT WHAT? your kid interviewed for a job at conde nast and they were only offering 18k salary? no way!
“There’s no “proper age”. Doing it for at least 3 months is highly recommended & from there it’s a personal decision. It often is maintained for a year & in Park Slope it’s not unheard of at 5 years. (IMO that’s 3.5 years too many.)”
gotcha arkady – i heard of a story of someone who was probably closer to 5 yrs than 1 yr. just find it weird.
“yeah, it’s tougher now for young folks entering college than prospects for their parents at that age. College more expensive, housing more expensive, less juicy jobs, more competition globally”
this is what pisses me off – you can do what EVERYONE says to do – do good in high school – get into a decent college – but once you get there, there’s only a FEW things you can study that will put you in a position to not live in near poverty for the rest of your life.
the reason i picked my career was pretty much because the debt incurred vs starting pay ratio was pretty good.
there used to be a day when someone could be a teacher or a social worker or something else less lucrative and still be comfortably middle class and afford to save to own property in a relatively safe neighborhood and afford to start a family.
again – i’m not complaining about myself – but i feel really bad for kids graduating college now.

dh, have you been missing the whole union thing???
Go to uft.org and see what teachers REALLY make!
Editorial assistant jobs at any glamour org start really really low.
yeah – there’s no real money in media or fashion (at least the creative areas). those are the “cool” jobs and people will do them for free.
you can make more money selling advertising space than creating hit commercials. fact.
