41k for 10 months of work = 49k for a year. Not a bad salary for someone just out of school. And then every year you get a nice raise. Whether you are good, bad, or indifferent.
Without looking it up, I believe the salary for a teacher with a masters and 17 years is around 106k.

Less when you consider how much teachers spend out of their own pockets on kids, particularly public-school teachers.
Anf for 10 months he works from 7 in the moring till nearly 10 at night. they take home a lot of paperwork and school-related work. They also have to be available for off hours meetings and other such stuff. Some summers he’s teaching remedial classes too. By the time June rolls around, he’s so exhausted he can barely move so yeah, he earned it.
“again -the starting salary for a NYC teacher is $41K – how is that lucrative? ”

Surely that is a fair rate of pay for someone who is pretty good. That’s for ten months’ of work with exceptional bennies.
My mother was a 2nd grade teacher in DC public schools. Widowed, she raised my brother & me. In the summer she’d work as a swimming counselor so we could all be together at quite luxe sleep-away camps. Both of us (my bro & I) got full scholarships to prep schools. My mother then started a practice as a child psychologist – she’d held off until we were of less impressionable ages.

“My brother-in-law takes second jobs when he can. The hours are killers.”
Yeah, July and August off really hurt!
And she finished her PhD as we were growing up. Had had all her credits except statistics.
My sister and brother-in-law are teachers- raised 2 kids, still a struggle. My brother-in-law takes second jobs when he can. The hours are killers.

She had her masters when she married – somewhat late at age 26. I was 6 mos when my father died; my mother was 34.
Arkady – when did your mom have time to go to school to get her degree? or did she already complete her Masters?
