Arkady, that makes sense. In ordinary life, we gravitate toward people who share certain experiences and we form groups around our work, our associations, our families, our family histories, our schooling, our interests and our training. Here, we don’t. That is the attraction and magic in a sense. We are all sort of thrown together, attracted by some wacky sense of community, connection to neighborhood or by the ability to quickly communicate ideas, information, and experiences. And we are attracted I think by the unpredictability and incongruousness of connections we make here.
In “real life”, getting to a level of intimacy where you discuss certain issues means negotiating a whole series of hurdles, social and personal. Here there is none of that.
Every person on this site has a complex set of experiences and have formed their ideas on the basis of a working through their own history, emotionally and intellectually.
For some things, i.e. Mother Teresa as a hero, there is obviously a lifetime of thinking that has led a person such as you or me to embrace or reject her as a hero. In another venue, if two people so different can actually find themselves face to face, they might explore the thought processes, the experiences, the emotions which led them to their conclusions.
But, here….no. Not really. That is why I decided not to discuss certain things here. Because there isn’t enough time (we are working for the most part) or the expectation or the attitude for “conversion” or the winning of someone over to another’s point of view. Or expanding another’s universe enough to allow for the possibility of entirely different experience.
When you go there…here on the OT… it usually ends up badly. At least that is what it seems to me. For fun, it is ok.
Legion, are you serious about Cartegena? That’s the next vacation for me and the Mrs
Definitely would consider it. As you know, Colombia has come a long way. I plan on going there in the next few years. It’s a serious consideration for my dad who is pretty much on his own in Florida and doesn’t want to come back to NYC.
ENY was there just recently. Perhaps he’ll give us his impression. I haven’t been there in a couple of decades. What I remember though is fantastic and if it’s good enough for Garcia Marquez…well.
“cobble and dibs have different ideas of ‘BIG’. I think dibs has more experience in this area, (altho it could be pretty close) so I’ll go with go with dibs’.”
No comment! And I’m sure DIBS has a little MORE experience than I do!!!!
Great film.
American film noir cannot be beat.
Check out The Killers with Burt Lancaster and Ava Gardner if you have a chance, based on an Earnest Hemmingway story.
Also, Double Indemnity and Mildred Pierce. Fantastic!
This is my first winter in NYC, and the first time I have dealt with snow for more than a few days at a time.
I must say that it has not been nearly the pain that I thought it would be.
I’m sure I would be thinking differently if I had a car or had to shovel my sidewalk.
