My cousin’s kid is studying anthropology and Arabic; Cousin and daughter went to Egypt together the summer before last. Cuz said that trip was beautiful; sense of history profound, but social vibe and treatment of her and her daughter very stiff, formal. She felt a threatened ominous feeling the whole time, a ‘don’t get off the tour bus’ feeling.

ET – I am sure your friends are ok, the lack of internet access of course is frustrating for them and probably nervewracking for friends and family trying to make sure they are ok!
Hopefully your American friend is working with the State dept in trying to get flight out of there sooner than later
