Ishtar, my mom just told me the same thing. A friend of hers bragged that she could drive her to the store in her AWD and make it up the hills of Pittsburgh. She got stuck headed up the hill to my mom’s house. My mom and Big Brother Snappy #2 had to go help her get her car back to her house. Ha!
Yes, it’s all about clearance. I used to have a GMC Jimmy that was quite high. i could get over a 2′ snowbank in fri=ont of me where I parked and out the entrance even when the snowplows had plowed us in.
Now I have a Dodge magnum which is a rather low-slung station wagon. Yes, it has AWD but I bet I couldn’t barrel through a 2′ high drift. I can easily drive it in 8″ of snow though as i did last weekend since my driveway in Bucks wasn’t plowed.
“Cobble, I didn’t know you were a Luna fan! Do you also like their incarnations as Galaxie 500 and Dean & Britta?”
I’m a HUGE HUGE FAN, Biff! Next time I see you “live”, I’ll tell you how I became aware of them, their music, and then met them several times. I went to A LOT of their shows in the 90s and then BH and I went to one of their NYE shows, one of their last shows, at South Paw before they finally split.
Donatella, not doing much work today. just doing some minor maintenance stuff on some of my reports, queries,… rest of the folks here are just chilling
ET, I’m not sure the X5 or X3 counts as an SUV. I think those are cross-over vehicles, meaning they are trucks on car platforms.
Also, people kill me with AWD/SUVs and assuming that they can handle almost anything. They can’t. Once there is a certain amount of snow on they ground they’re just as useless as cars. AWD is good for maintaining traction, but it doesn’t mean you can drive through 6″ of snow and an SUV needs to have a AWD AND a certain amount of clearance inorder to drive over that amount of snow, which BMW and Lexus doesn’t have to my knowledge.
Biff, Oh,m and yes, I like all incarnations. Did you read Dean’s book? Black Postcards? If not, I’ll lend it to you.
: )
You also have to be able to put it in a lower gear for real effectiveness.
“I may have to sing a few Irish drinking songs….
What the F@*K am I doing here?
Is anybody really working today?”
Never heard of those last two. Hum a few bars and I’ll fake it.

“Legion, that would be the elusive Callary Pear-Eating Bird.”
Excellent!
I’ve been looking to add one of those to my collection.
…and to try out my new air rifle with telescopic laser sights! ;o)
