  1. nah slopey, no brass bands or jazz funerals (which sounds awesome!)

i only made it to the spotted cat and d.b.a on frenchman as far as music places go. great jazz jam band was playing at spotted cat, and a not as great coverband playing at d.b.a (but there was an amazing girl in a red dress dancing, and pretty much showing up the band)

didn’t have nearly enough time to see everything – but i’ll def shoot you an email next time i go since it seems you know what’s up!!

DH, did you have time to do a side trip to the Garden District?

no, only had one full day there. definitely want to go back soon and see more.

  3. You go hear any brass bands, dh? More importantly, you go to any jazz funerals? I tried to go 12 years ago when I was down there, but only one was listed in the paper and no one would tell me how to get there. Interestingly, the nice ladies at the official tourist office in the FQ were horrified that I wanted to do that, but the guys in the cool record store nearby assured me that any time “jazz funeral” is listed in the obits, public is certainly welcome to watch the procession as the whole idea is a big, raucous send off. Seems to me a tourist office should be staffed by people who know the local customs (besides jello shots on Bourbon Street, I mean).

  4. CGar, congratulations, that is great news. Best of luck.

Benson, if Cuomo is copying the reality politics of Christie, more power to him. Give credit where credit is due. You are a resident of NY State. This is GOOD news.

This IS something screwy with the Chinese currency – to have such a trade and current account surplus and to have such a low currency. Then again, EVERYBODY is trying to keep their currency lower – we are contributing to that effort by QE2, the Euro simply by being a basket case, Commodity currencies (South American countries including Brazil, Chile, Bolivia, Peru etc) putting on the breaks on inflows by instituting inflow controls (surcharges on collateral on trading, increasing reserves on banks selling the dollar, etc. etc.).

  5. I mean, it’s not anywhere close to being as safe as NYC, and when you ask locals cool places to hang out – their suggestions typically come with detailed instructions about what streets are safe to walk on – but still – very impressed!
