  1. “Do you think that the US was going to sit back and watch as the ideology of communism was being spread by force throughout the world?”

Legion, it seems this is where you and I perhaps differ the most in our thinking. Maybe I’m putting words in your mouth, but I simply do not accept that the US really has/had any interest whatsoever is stopping the spread of communism and in promoting democracy.

I’m paraphrasing what I’ve said before but I see a rise of U.S. imperialism (a nation founded on imperialism) whereas you seem to view U.S. foreign involvement as “fighting the good fight”. The U.S. has been expansionist (killing / displacing Native Americans, since day 1).

I don’t frame the Vietnam War and all other imperialist adventures as a “blundering effort to do good” or “bring democracy” or spread freedom, etc. I believe it’s the opposite. Vietnam / Nicaragua / Cuba, etc. – it is the threat of a good example: if they can have for example free health care / low infant mortality / free university etc. etc., well then it kind of sends the wrong lesson to the populace of the rich countries.

The U.S. actually did not “lose” the Vietnam war from the masters’ point of view: they insured (to this day tons of unexploded ordinance, defoliated toxic environments) that there will be no independent economic development in that country of disobedient “insurgents”. They had to be “shown their place.” Even in the 80’s the U.S would block other countries from sending humanitarian aid to Vietnam. This is “the culture of terrorism”.

  2. Are you coming ET????? Come to Spumoni Gardens.

Yeah, my hooptie isn’t bullet proof, but I am a great get away driver. My father once said that if he decided to start robbing again, he would have me be his “wheel man”.

  3. legion- that isn’t what biff was saying at all. But what makes the invasion of Iraq different is that
    1. there was no active war with Iraq in 2001; No ongoing military engagment that could have pulled us in a la Vietnam.
    2. We had been attacked by Al Qaeda and were fighting them in Afghanistan
    3. there was no existing or compelling reason to invade Iraq.
    4. It had been determined by earlier administrations after the gulf War that having Saddam in place was good as a counterweight to the religious zealots who took over Iran.

  4. Donatella, Biff, the Pres, needs you to “take” the bullet (if any is fired upon the car). NOT duck. Ask CGar for the secret svc manual on the protocol of protecting the Pres

  5. “It is this Sat, Biff. I can drive you!!!”

I’m heading to the border as we speak.

“Be afraid, ET. Be very afraid :-)”
I really am. Can you provide a route of tour, so I can avoid all possible run ins.
btw – if you’re around dyker in the evening and the xmas decorations are still up (?), check them out. Seems like more houses got glitzed this year.

  6. Innocents get killed during wars. This is a simple fact. I doubt the US has killed 1/100th the number of innocents as have others that either started wars or engaged in genocide within their own countries.

    Discussion over.

US did fire on their own citizens at Kent State.
