Rich folks are going to spend more money if the economy seems like it’s doing well. I think it’s more psychological; it’s not like the multimillionaire *needs* that extra 30k to buy groceries, so it will get sat on until they’re feeling secure about the universe.
Give poorer people 1k, and they’re more likely to actually go out and spend it because there’s more stuff out there that they need or that they are being convinced that they need (xbox), and they don’t have the discretionary income. Plus, it seems like a windfall, and we tend to spend windfalls.
But again, these are points that are irrelevant to the two party’s goals, which is just drumming up support and staying in charge of whatever it is they’ve got.
Ishtar, I am right now thinking about deploying investment capital in the private sector because of possible extension of the tax cuts.
Without the extension of the cuts, I will not be investing that way.
Seperately, Mrs DCB has a small business. I think she should expand. She wont until she feels more se4cure about the future.
lech, do you think that anti-discrimination legislation reduces discrimination?”
I doubt it. Certainly not in my line of work anyways. Basically any time someone gets fired for a perfectly good reason they come up with a list of ways they can claim discrimination. Totally disgusting. Even if 1 out of 100 discrimination claims is valid I think the damage this does to the economy waaaaay outweighs the help it might do for that one person.
“There are a lot of people gainfully employed who fear unemployment and if the economy were to strengthen and those fear allayed, they too would start spending more.”
Eaxactly, almost every one of my friends is sitting on cash for fear of un-employement. Almost all in their 40s-50s who squirrel away cash instead of vacations, renovations or long term investing.

If some of that money could be unleashed….
Cool, Cobble. Will do.
Ishtar – stop agreeing with Jackal! Any man that takes pride in wearing a cheap coat that can afford a nice one needs to be taken down a few notches.
