  1. I’m not trying for anything benson- Whether or not you agree with it, as Lech does, at least he has the humanity to understand how horrible an action it was. That takes a lot more depth of character than you seem to be exhibiting.

  2. Slopey;

    I would submit to you that the person who really comes out smelling like a rose from the leaks is Hillary Clinton. I applaud her directive to snoop on the diplomats at the UN.

  3. CIA covert operations type stuff, like the killing of the Iranian nuclear scientists.

    I think we had our chance to annihilate afghanistan yet we pussy footed around there. No one in the world was against us then and we blew it.

  4. Meanwhile, bombing of Dresden killed many more civilians, I believe than the two A bombs. I haven’t read this history for a while, but I tend not to quibble with Hiroshima, but somewhat with Nagasaki. I believe we had intelligence Japan was moving toward surrender before Nagasaki. A lot of civilian deaths might have been avoided if we waited a few more days, in light of the available intelligence. Russia wasn’t due to invade until the end of the month, if I remember right.

  5. dibs- what makes you think we aren’t? Are you advocating wholesale bombings in countries we think harbor terrorists? Not that I would object to someone carpet bombing the area where Bin Laden is said to be hiding, but do you mean blowing up Yemen’s airports in a snit?

  6. benson — day in day out diplomacy and spying is the work of professionals doing their jobs. But part of the job is to execute US policy. Wikileaks docs include those showing actions taken pursuant to Obama admin directives, whether diplomatic efforts to obtain Russia & China support for Iran sanctions, directive to spy at UN, etc.

    My point isn’t to assert that the docs show greatness on Obama’s point. There is a normal range to quibble about any president’s approach to international displmacy and intelligence, and I’m all for that. My point is that there are certain caricatures that get thrown around frequently by the likes of Glenn Beck that I perceive to be an effort to trash any meaningful consideration of Obama’s efforts by shaping an opinion that he is fundamentally hostile to US interests. Beck and others have worked this Kenyan “anti-colonial” theme any number of ways. I think if there were even a shred of truth to it, you would see something in the docs that those folks would be howling about already as proof of that theory.
