  1. We put silver dollars under da kid’s pillow for the tooth. But I just remembered we kept them for safekeeping. Damn, where are they? Wanna redeem them fast with the price of silver being what it is.

  2. “And Zola was a truth-teller, so was Zola talking about himself as being dangerous?”

That’s an interesting idea. Perhaps he may have been. I took it that his overall message was that the power structure of the capitalist elite (represented by the mien owners), while all powerful is vulnerable to the lone, determined idealist/radical. In that sense it did represent Zola himself, particularly in terms of issues like the Dreyfus case. I think he was also simply trying to depict the plight of the working class, who are bound to a system they neither understand or control. Or something like that.

  3. The PETA people generally ARE nutjobs of the highest order. But, sticky traps for mice are cruel unless you’re around to stomp on them once they get caught. besides, the spring traps are reusable.

  4. My daughter believed in Santa until she was around 6. Since we’re Jewish, we had to modify the tale, and she put a stocking on the mantle of the house around the corner where she spent a lot of time when she was young. But it wasn’t the all-consuming Christmas-is-coming!!! Santa experience.

The tooth fairy expired pretty young too but she kept expressing a strong belief for a long time, mostly because she wanted the money. She’s always been a creature of logic.

I am amused when I read about 10-year-olds whose parents claim they believe. I am sure it’s because they figure their parent(s) will be more generous than if they were giving gifts themselves rather than from the jolly fat guy. By 10, kids have learned how to play the game.

Lechacal, I know you hate Christmas but just let your wife win this one. You won’t have to lie (just speak with care), it won’t kill you, and it’s really fun to watch little kids engage in this fantasy. It won’t hurt them, I’m sure, and you will be able to let them down easy when it’s time.

Biff, you might want to remember the tooth fairy experience of instant-info from one kid to the other when you start explaining sex. There is a way to explain that you are telling this Champ and this Champ only, that it’s not for sharing! I imagine that will save you some grim phone calls from PS8.
