I was in Walmart (the one on Old Country Road that someone mentioned in the WF thread) yesterday. Dark and depressing, and not necessarily cheaper than Target–some things definitely, some things not. Different emphasis on products–I was surprised at how skimpy the over-the-counter medicine section was. Not really cheaper than Ikea for household goods. Lots of crapola dollar store quality stuff that cost more than a dollar.
why do shitty minimum wage jobs always pay higher in the suburbs than they do in NYC? the stores in NYC must do higher volumes of sales (and charge more) – yeah, rent is higher, but corporate knew that shit going in.
the mcdonalds in my hometown had a sign up for jobs at about $12 an hour. I made $12 plus tips when I worked at a LI Starbucks.
Lech is right, POOR = tons of sacrifices. parents raised my brother & I on peanut incomes. no car, no vacations, no expensive toys, no fancy clothing or shoes, tenament living,…. in hindsight, I liked growing up that way – really learn to appreciate what’s really important, study hard in school, no job too shitty to take,…
Benson, I’m going to have to beg off again. I’ve got a really bad cold which is throwing my work schedule off, as I’ve been in bed instead of working, therefore I’m going to need the weekend to catch up. I really do want to do this, but it may have to be later, rather than sooner. Next weekend is bad, Bxgrl and I are doing a craft show at the Brooklyn Historical Society. Everyone should come and buy gifts for the holidays from starving craftspeople like us. It runs Wed-Sun. 11-7 weekdays, 10-6 weekend. (Unabashed plug). The 18th or 19th are good, or after Christmas.
Like denton, i went into my first Walmart in Philly back in 1999 or so and never went into another one. Luckily, where there’s a Walmart, there’s usually a Target not so far away.

“”I read once that the target demographic for WalMart is a family of four making 30k. Costco, otoh, was a family with income of 80k.”
Cosco pays a sh!tload better than Wal-Mart.

I thought I wouldn’t have to point out that a higher income customer demographic means more money for salaries. I see I was wrong.

maybes walmart should get a big tax deduction for their charitable work helping improve the life of poor people. that is if they pay any taxes.
I was in Wal-Mart in Hinsdale New Hampshire on Thansksgiving morning. I purchased:
– A box of 100 12 ga shotgun shells
– Two boxes of 100 rounds .40 S&W
– .223 high velocity rounds for the awesome sniper rifle
as a consumer, love wal-mart.
