I suspect that New Jersey is worse re municipal unions than NYC. A friend lives in Bayonne and tells me that there is a huge moneyed class of upper level civil retired servants with pensions that have them set for life with 100,000+ pensions and lots of double dipping. There were a lot of disability pensions related to 9-11 here but I think NJ is really the pits. I think NJ needs Christie.
Newark’s Police Union Rejects Offer to Avoid Firings
Nov. 23 (Bloomberg) — The Newark police union turned down an offer from Mayor Cory Booker’s administration that would avoid the dismissal of as many as 167 officers in New Jersey’s largest city.
The Newark Fraternal Order of Police’s executive board unanimously voted yesterday to reject the proposals presented by the city’s business administrator, the union said in a press release today. The union representing Newark’s 1,279-member force had offered concessions including lower stress pay, clothing allowances and raises, according to the city.
In a press conference Nov. 20, Booker asked the union to work out a deal with the city of 280,000 and put forward a plan that included forgoing dismissals in exchange for five furlough days and a reduction in overtime that went beyond what the unions proposed. Booker gave the union until Nov. 30 to vote on the plan.
“Firing 167 officers is entirely avoidable,†Booker said at the press conference at the police command communications center.
So, instead of concessions, lower OT and a slight pay cut, 167 people are out of jpbs and the streets of newark are less safe.
Sounds like union logic to me.
I always wished I worked downtown. Seemed more interesting/architecturally—closer waterfront–
(and of course much more walkable to home than midtown).
This is the best Kanye album, IMO. I love it. I’ve had it in rotation for 2 weeks now.
i come from the #1 corrupt county in new jersey, in fact the entire nation!

Does Newark still have the annual “Safe Day” for people to visit cemeteries where their loved ones are buried?
I am more worried about the psychotic in North Korea than the one in Prospect Heights.
I worked for my entire life (except couple of year interludes in Tokyo and KC) downtown in the Financial District. Probably in a 5 block radius.
wow that newark police union sound like a bunch of greedy uncaring fucks. looks like it’s back to square one for good old brick city!
*rob*
Where’s Snappy?
Apparently the new Kanye West album that was released today is really good
So you might have some newish good hip-hop to listen to!
More asinine union behaviour…..
