I don’t give to charity. I’ve been around enough nonprofits to have a deep cynicism about the nonprofit world and the intentions of a lot of people who work in it. And I think the tax deduction for charitable giving is basically a federal subsidy of smugness.

For some reason, I’m expected to open my wallet whenever a nurse’s assistant or clerk in some department I’ve never even visited, has a birthday or decides to retire.
I’ve been funding one woman’s religious retreats for some religious group in the Bronx for about 3 years now.
Off topic (if that’s possible) Just looked out my window and there are workers with tar paper and screwguns on the roof of the Elkins house.
Which is basically rearranging deckchairs on the titanic- that has got to be the most horrible-looking roof I’ve ever seen. I could toss a watermelon into the building through those holes.
