  1. “Thanks folks! I’m trying to avoid any charity that is even slightly controversial. Just want a place to take toys. Loving all your suggestions!”

haha – is that how this started? we’re getting very deep!!

  2. I’m kind of chary about the Salvation Army because of their disrespect for gay people.

I’ve heard about the center in Red Hook too. Snappy, I can get you contact info if you want. Also the church on 8th Ave. between 10th St. and 11th St. (I guess they sold off the lot on 10th St.) has a food bank and other programs for the homeless mentally ill.

Sanctuary for Families (http://sffny.org) does great work for victims of domestic violence.

I know a few organizations/schools that do great work and have angels that fundraise for them via society balls and such. I have very mixed feelings. One is the NY Harbor School, which is now on Governor’s Island. Yes, it’s an offensive way to fundraise, but if it makes rich people give up their bucks, then I can see it.

What bothers me are the NYC private schools. Lloyd Blankfein gave the Ethical Culture-Fieldston School a building for their middle school. His kids go there, along with lots of rich kids whose parents can afford to pay $35k/year and a tiny number who get scholarships. Ugh.

  3. “And like I said- they even charge disaster victims. Don’t know if they still do it- but I knew people who got bills after the Red Cross provided disaster relief following major flooding.”

they tried to charge my grandfather for a drink while he was sitting on a runway in Germany during WWII after he got his arm shot off.

  4. “Yes, she was always pole-ite when I saw her.
I felt all the world was a stage and I was in the lap of luxury (or vice versa) whenever she was around.”

…and her buttocks gave new meaning to the term:
    Theatre in the Round!

  5. The Red Cross has huge administrative costs, and spends a lot less of every dollar on relief. They were in the middle of a huge controversy over this just after 9-11, when they were asking for donations and then it was discovered that even those funds earmarked for 9-11 disaster relief went to admin costs and other projects.

And like I said- they even charge disaster victims. Don’t know if they still do it- but I knew people who got bills after the Red Cross provided disaster relief following major flooding.
