  1. It literally felt like a whole football field would fit in there, and the floorspace was almost totally empty and silent and very dark except for the candlelight. The room we were in had the most ornate friezes, some of them almost grotesque. I felt like randomly proposing to anyone I met.

  2. rf, next time you’re there, go across the canal and kill some time at Cherry Hill Market. Awesome Russian food shopping place for already prepared foods and they have a cute cafe (inside and outside) where you can grab coffee/tea and dessert and linger around.

  3. I will know that the federal government is getting serious about entitlement reform and closing our deficit when two programs are eliminated: food stamps and section 8 vouchers.

Both programs are income supplements for poor and the working poor, and are redundant. By redundant, I mean that we already have an income supplement program for the working poor – it is called the Earned Income Tax Credit. Eliminate food stamps and section 8 vouchers and roll them into the EITC or welfare payments. It would cut back on alot of administrative overhead. It would kep the government out of landlord-tenant relations, where it doesn’t belong.

You know why such a reform is not implemented? It would put thousand of civil-service bureaucrats out of work, who are really the main beneficieries of these two programs.

  4. To me, St. John the Divine is impressive, but cold. It also doesn’t feel reverent to me — doesn’t seem to be much about religion. The Brooklyn Catholic churches to me are much more beautiful, warm, and inspiring. (I went to some kind of tea ceremony thing given by a Japanese friend’s Japan group and the minister did a little wierdo bringing the tea to the alter thing and the whole thing creeped me out). I went with my cousin who was impressed by how “flexible” that huge space is. Like it would be a good Costco.

  5. Jester, that sounds really beautiful. Early music resonates in spaces like that. It must have been as close to being in a Medieval cathedral as one could get in the New World. Cool.
