  1. Oh come on, no rejoinders to my conservative manifesto at 9:48?

    OK I’ll try then:

What the state creates, the state can take away.

Modern wealth exists only because modern markets exist.

Modern markets cannot exist without the state. They are not the result of the natural growth of human bartering. They are artificial creatures supported by laws and state power.

Because the state created the wealth, the state can decide how to distribute it.

  2. re Slopie, he didn’t give the technical lesson (re guns, Denton did that) but discussed guns in terms from a constitutional perspective with Lech. Reread my sentence and it wasn’t clear.

    Later…

  3. “D to Atlantic and then cross the platform to the R. *Much* faster.”

it was the weekend and the R went over the manhattan bridge and only made one stop before atlantic/pacific. the R/Q is ALWAYS so slow though. At least when I finally cram my ass on to an L train, the thing high tails it to union square.

  4. Re QE II, this is a big part of the commodity story…obviously not the whole story, there are plenty of bullish stories in agriculture (climate change is doing some very strange things to historical weather patterns and effects on crops).

Etson, I heard some excellent presentations on natural gas Monday night — the shale gas story, increasing part of the natural gas supply in US and Canada, drilled down into specific fields/plays and also a fascinating presentation on LNG, how that story is shifting and massive world divergences in price (driven by infrastructure, regulatory issues etc)

If you want the presentations (or anybody, email me at Donatellaoffortgreene at hotmail dot com.)

On a separate note, I am reading a wonderful book, “Lit” by Mary Karr, author of the “Liars Club”. (Lit sort of refers to being drunk and literature). It is a coming of age memoir of a scrappy young Texas woman, who grew up on the wrong side of the tracks (understatement).

Great way her father describes the trust-funding, elitist kids/people of priviledge we love to bash:

“Born on third base, my daddy always said of the well off, and think they hit a home run.”

    See ya later.

PS – CMU yesterday’s discussion on guns was pretty interesting actually. It talked about the origin of our thinking on guns, the Constitutional amendment etc. and sometimes Lech is a knobhead but he actually said some really interesting helpful things about this. Read yesterday’s thread. Also, Slopie and Denton, who gave me a technical lesson in the differences in semi-automatic and automatic weapons.
