“I (and others) said about Paladino: how ia hw going to do that? Absolutely no explanation of HOW he would knock heads and make the legislature do his bidding”
He was not beholden to the unions. Could veto spending bills ad nauseum.
“Cuomo at least proposed a constitutional convention to change the basic structure of the state government to something that works better.”
A cheap trick to distract from the 800lb guerilla in the room: a party (NYS Democrats) and legislature that is completely beholden to the civil-service and health-care workers’ union.
>the countryside in England feels a lot safer that the countryside here in the North East
Does the lack of a gun culture make is seem safer? Or is it safer as a whole and people feel less fear and don’t want guns?
This country was founded on violent overthrow of the government and rugged individualism, which might have served well 400 yrs ago. Today that same individualistic attitude works on some levels (innovation, social mobility, less classism) but in general is bad for the society as a whole (what’s in it for me, don’t tread on me.) No surprise that Ayn Rand is revered more here than in other countries.
You kid, but BH feels Englandy to me. It reminds me of Hampstead Village in London where I lived when I was at college, and which I also couldn’t afford.

Still using those semicolons with your salutations, eh?
“What are you talking about? Kilkenny was one of the highlights of my trip! Castles, pubs, old churches and greenery everywhere. It’s gorgeous.â€
Yeah – I’m sure it was – but I was trying to get from Trinity College to the Dublin Airport for a flight. Pretty dumb to end up in Kilkenny under those circumstances.
“When all is said and done, the NYS Democrats will have to account for the fact that they sent the same exact group of hacks to Albany.”
And yet the same could be said for the Republicans for all the years they held sway.

Benson,

Slopey;
When all is said and done, the NYS Democrats will have to account for the fact that they sent the same exact group of hacks to Albany.
“The English countryside is small lanes, tea shops and vicars and right of way footpaths going over even the most aristocratic estates.”
Sounds just like Brooklyn Heights.

There was an old girl of Kilkenny
Whose usual charge was a penny.
For half of that sum
You could finger her bum;
T`was a source of amusement for many.
