  1. slopefarm: That is one example of loosening (or prevention of tightening at the state level, technically). But the regulation of financial services is so vast, so complex, and there are so many counter examples of tightening of policy during the same years, that that this doesn’t change my overall assessment of the Bush years in this area: it was basically neutral with respect to financial services regulation.

  2. quote:
Does anyone care about Charlie Sheen being found naked and incoherent in a hotel room at the Plaza this morning? UGH this guy needs serious REHAB!

rehab for what? having a fun night!?

    *rob*

  3. “Would a 1-term limit on all gov positions gotten us real reform as the politicians wouldn’t have to worry about re-election exposures, etc?”

This doesn’t make sense to me. Can you rephase? Thanks!

I believe term limits should exist for the highest lever position in a given government structure (president, mayor, governor, etc.). I do not think members of the House, city council, etc. should be subjected to those same term limits. Mostly because there needs to be continuity in policy implementation. If the person isn’t doing a good job just vote them out. No one is forcing people to keep electing the same jackasses.

While we’re on term limits, I find it funny that people want to point the finger at Bloomberg for over turning term limits when it was the city council (29-22) that voted to overturn a voter mandate. Funny that most of them were also facing term limits themselves.

  4. cmu, what I hate is regurgitation of popular ideas without undererstanding them. Drives me fucking insane.

And re: wife and kids, I also get up in their business when they say things they can’t back up. Not like I do with you of course, there’s a special kind of vitriol I reserve just for you for some reason. You hold that special hateful place in my heart for your repeated violations of the “don’t say shit you don’t understand and can’t back up” principle.

  5. “Not technically a deregulation, but Bush admin not only failed in stunning fashion to respond to the excesses, they affirmatively abetted those excesses by blocking state govt from doing anything.”

And, not surprisingly, I agree with Slopey.

  6. M4L — staff would run things and be even less accountable.

cmu — I think jackal’s family knows he’s a jerk and they love him for it. No point in pushing that line of argument. (I’d put a little wink in there but I don’t know if I’d be winking at jackal, cmu, or Mrs. Jackal, which would get me in heaps of trouble.)

  7. “One area I would pin blame on Bush is in his push to expand home ownership. Many say that this directive pushed Fannie and Freddie to get into the business of underwriting sub-prime mortgages.”

HOLD THE PHONE! STOP THE PRESSES! BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES! I may faint! I agree with benson!

I was JUST talking about the press conference where Bush talked about that last night. I need to find that clip! I remember it very clearly.
