  1. Yes Pete I think Irish Catholics are demonic – I mean we do believe in Leperachans and wee people!

CH – me too – I also have more of an appreciate of the Quakers who were instrumental especially in Queens/Long Island in reminding Peter Stuyvesant in NYC that the constitution states freedom for all Religions
and who knew that Jews were here as early has the mid 1600’s -very cool

Lech – well I think the point was that Religion did inspire institutions like schools and that Protestant ethics were taught b/c it was believed you would be a better American citizen. but through time with exploration from various groups, the idea of church vs. state came about.

Anyone watch “God in America” on Channel 13 last night? It was really fascinating regarding the history of how protestantism spread through the country in the early days and how the NY Public school system was created by the Evangelicals!”

But…. wait… I thought the tea party people were completely wrong about christian roots in the United States. I thought we were always just a totally secular country from day one and people who say our public institutions are fundamentally christian are lying. Is that not correct?

I just looked at the website, apparently, you can watch it online, too. I’ll catch up on the part I missed today.

I really didn’t have a real awareness of how pivotal the evangelicals were.

  4. ch -agreed I learned a lot too – I even stayed up for the God in NYC program too
which I enjoyed b/c it explored how NYC is really unique b/c all religions can practice literally next door to each other without incident and how the mosque at ground zero is really an anamoly to the nyc experience with regards to practicing religion in peace
