  1. I know it may be easier said than done, but poor people in areas where the main food choice is an overpriced bodega should start expending the extra energy, vote with their wallets and stop paying those ridiculous prices for basically unhealthy food items. Any store is going to charge whatever they can get for their items. If you let them know, via not shopping there anymore, that you simply won’t support those prices/products, they prices will come down/product choices will change. It’s a very simple supply and demand issue.

  2. oh yeah and in poor areas since there are so many people using food stamps and food cards, of COURSE owners will jack up the prices. the same way that section 8 landlords jack up the rent prices in the hood!! it’s guaranteed money, what do they care?

  3. “Rob, it’s an often documented fact that grocery prices are higher in low income neighborhoods than in more affluent ones”

Wow, Montrose I love you but that totally goes against every experience I’ve ever had in New York. When I moved from the UES to Brooklyn Heights, I noticed a slight decrease in grocery costs. When I go to most Brooklyn neighbourhoods outside of Brooklyn Heights, I’m very surprised with how much lower the grocery prices are. In fact, I had a discussion about this with my sister-in-law this weekend and Mrs C, who is very price conscious, fully agreed that, in her experience, prices in lower income neighbourhoods are much lower than in higher income neighbourhoods.

Even here, people are constantly remarking how much more expensive groceries are in BH, Park Slope, etc. compared to other Brooklyn nabes.

they charge more in grocery stores in poorer areas because there is such a tiny margin due to theft and because people in poorer areas are not going to buy insanely price marked up products like free trade coffee, 10 dollar chocolate bars, and all the other shit that cause yuptards to cream their panties.
