  2. That of course is not to say that the store owners are necessarily in the right for charging what they do and stocking mainly crap foods, but personal responsibility has to play a part somewhere. Yes, it’s tiring to travel to Fairway or other out of the way decent markets, but if you constantly make the choice to support/buy crap and high prices, you too share some of the blame.

  3. Ok, Snappy’s last post made me aware that I need to qualify my opinion. I’m talking apples to apples (i.e., prices in Key Foods in one area vs a Key Foods in another area). If one is comparing a bodega in a poorer neighbourhood to a chain grocery store in another neighbourhood, the results may be different – but that’s not a real comparison.

  4. I’m not so sure about that, Biff. I buy most of my groceries at Trader Joe’s. Before that opened I would go to the grocery stores in Brooklyn Heights because the Associated near me in Crown Heights is crazy expensive for the products I buy and their meat and produce looked like they were already rotten.

  5. “people in poorer areas are not going to buy insanely price marked up products like free trade coffee, 10 dollar chocolate bars”

So by this logic you should like this stuff b/c it keeps your food costs lower by subsidizing the ordinary stuff.

(not saying I agree but that is where your argument leads)

  6. When I’ve been to Fairway I’ve seen plenty of socioeconmic diversity stocking up on foods. I assume thats helped by the bus, as Snappy says.

Some people are poor because of circumstances beyond their control. Some people are poor because they continually make bad choices and decisions, like shortsighted selling of pre-tax purchased metrocards and subsequent purchases of post-tax purchased metrocards.

  7. “ET- we have to get our roles straight. I AM the WIFE. you ARE THE TRAMP…er….MISTRESS. When I let him off his leash, you can play with him ;-)”

Thank God I wrote this into the ketubah.

  8. “they charge more in grocery stores in poorer areas because…”

Um Rob, aren’t you the one who’s constantly chastising people in Brooklyn Heights for overpaying for groceries?
