We would hope that
Congress and the public will slow down its headlong
push into trade protection regarding China, for we
suspect that few of either group
would be able to say “Yes, I knew
that,†if asked “Did you know that
China is the US’ third largest
export market?†Further, we
imagine that few would be able to
say further that “Yes, I knew that
too†if asked “Did you know that
US exports to China grew more
than 70% faster last year than did
China’s exports to the US?†Both are
true, however. China is indeed the US
third largest export destination and last
year as China’s exports to the US grew
21%, US exports to China grew 36%.â€
Congress is really showing it’s ignorance here. That siad, it was a measure that was passed by the House (where the real lunatic fringe lives) and will likely be quashed by the Senate. The functining of the republic is not completely broken.
Dave, did you read Krugman’s piece about China? I’m not sure I can come up with a good reason as to why this country should be telling another country how to manage its currency? It might be annoying, but how can we pretend that is justifiable? I think this is what you mentioned the other day.
lech, I’m afraid not, the senior partners are out and I’m running the show today. Infact I’ve only got another 15 mins or so before the lift off.
