  1. Ringo,

Schools that spend 8 months a year teaching to the test are likely to get much better test results, ergo a better letter grade. The tests are for English and math only so if the school devotes resources to teaching science or social studies, sorry, no “progress.” Progress and achievement are measured strictly by scores on these tests. Also I’ve looked a bit at the “comparable” schools and it’s hard to know how they were picked. My daughter’s middle school is a pre-k-8 school and the “comparable” schools are all over the map, all over the city.

Mind you, all my daughter’s previous schools (pre-k, k-5, 5-8) got As and always get As. But a lot of that is because all of them have at least a plurality of Chinese kids in attendance. The high school grades won’t come out until November.

Having endured 10 years of NYC public education for my daughter so far, I am extremely impressed with the schools she attended, but much less so with the DOE and the zillions of dollars they have spent on “accountability.” My daughter has always been in classes the maximum size (e.g., 32 in 5th grade, 34 in high school) and that really sucks. Makes it very difficult for teachers and principals.

  2. “but that’s MEDICAL marijuana. i can guarantee you the shit the rest of us would get would be very expensive and shitty”

so? it’s homegrown with government over site and it’s about half the price of black market stuff.

  3. ” missed my high school reunion because they didnt have it at 10 years, but had it at 11 instead. wtf? ”

    Mine too, rob, mine too!

I wore a baseball cap all day yesterday when it was raining – keeps the rain off my glasses and if it’s just sprinkling you don’t even need an umbrella if you have the hat.

  4. dona: Isn’t it more likely to see women in work mode in Manhattan rather than PS where it is 100% residential and you are likely to be seeing people walking around doing errands

But mostly I visit MH in the evenings or weekends, so not work attire. I’m just sayin’ generally there’s a higher standard across the river.

  5. quote:
but let’s discuss some of these messy men in Park slope – I mean come on!!! why are you wearing Teva’s and board shorts in 50 degree weather with your old college sweatshirt?

lol. i dont know what tevas are, but did you see me at the supermarket last night ?! i see no purpose in dressing up in park slope. people dont seem very judgemental about what other people wear and there’s no one there im looking to impress, duh. who cares if go to the supermarket in a faux fur and pajamas

    *rob*

  6. omg, I do not like baseball caps on men.

    it is profoundly depressing.

However, regarding wearing one BACKWARDS…I would never talk to a man over 10 wearing a baseball cap that way.
