I am a proud conservative.
Etson pretty much hits it on the head wrt the underlying philosophy of conservatism.
I also happen to believe that conservatism has been on an upward trajectory for the past 30 years, with fits and stops here and there. I believe that this trajectory will continue for the foreseeable future. Indeed, I believe it will accelerate.
etson- I have to say that the meaning of liberal/democrat have changed so fast in the last few years it makes my head spin. What I do feel is that we are undergoing a great political change and that the center on both sides is meeting more and more while the extremes on both sides are increasing in strength and threatening to tear us part. I really believe we have lost our way and it will be a long time, if ever, that we learn how to work together again. And its a terrible thing to say but I really don’t like this country any more. I may love it, but like it? No.
Etson, you’re correct that the term “liberal” in America has long since lost its original meaning, and is closer to the European social democrat. And I appreciate your tempered tone, as opposed to Lechacal who is reliably insulting and inaccurate in his characterizations of American liberals.
bxgrl, I would classify your views as I have seen them on here as social democrat and not liberal by the traditional / academic definition (which I understand closer to the US ‘libertarian’).
Not meaning anything bad by that.

“The greatest irony being that lechacal is himself an American liberal.”
I’m an American liberal in the classical English enlightenment sense, but I’m certainly not an American liberal in the progressive statist sense.

I’m insulting, that I’ll agree with.

“I save my teabagging for the bedroom.”
Where you prefer Chinese and Mexican tea?

I drink Chinese & Japanese tea…no bags. I save my teabagging for the bedroom.
