    >He said that he started longing to work, as an adult, at around 14. He was a really bright kid and very tall so he looked older and he said he longed to drive a truck. He nver did but he resented his enforced minor status. He was fine with child labor. He is a very educated guy now

Yeah, but I doubt he’s a brain surgeon or a nuclear physicist.

What a crock that you can self- (or home-) educate. I have a very high opinion of myself, but I’m not an expert or even a great teacher (son can testify) and I would be greatly short-changing him if I let him slough off at school or home-schooled him

Actually, my friend is a brilliant man who did NOT drop out of school, instead continued with school, and more school, and more school. Became a Jesuit and a college professor.

  2. What’s ridiculous about it, Sloper? Before this racket we call higher education and mandatory schooling, most people had hands on learning. This includes lawyers and many medical professionals.

  3. Gem, I was up at 3:30, and heard the jets and the sonic boom. I thought a plane was going to crash in my backyard. I looked out the window and saw 2 choppers following it as it crossed over Park Slope. I honestly thought I’d hear a horrible crash, it was really scary, and I don’t scare easily.

I think they changed the flight path, maybe for the UN meeting? because I’ve been hearing low planes all morning, and have seen more helicopters than usual.

  4. IDEAL ENGAGEMENT RING STRATEGY:
The Groom goes and buys the rock. (Hint: Get a GIA certificate of authenticity)
Then Propose and give bride the stone and offers to shop for a setting with her.
This worked great for me. The future Mrs DCB was delighted.

  5. “however i will say i have NEVER seen a kid in nyc, regardless of income, or neighborhood, who doesnt have a cell phone that’s 10x more expensive than mine, a wardrobe that is 10x more expensive than mine, ipod, etc etc. ah well”

    SERIOUSLY!!!
why does an 8 year old need a cell phone? my young nieces and nephews all have them and it baffles my mind.

  7. “Education is a myth. Rob is right – it’s just babysitting. Even in the best private schools.”

This is one of the more ridiculous statements that Lech has made. And that’s saying a lot, given how many other ridiculous statements he has made here.
