I actually have a very “pull myself up by the bootstraps type of personality, so I really won’t go on welfare b/c I will in fact take that $35K a year job first obviously and frankly am not “mad” at my employer for letting me go b/c shit I escaped 12 years of layoffs so it finally caught me. what I am mad at is that there are so many great talented unemployed people out there all competing for the same job that now b/c the economy has changed so much businesses are underpaying for the same job they would have paid $15K more for 2 years ago – that’s what makes me mad. am not really scared yet as it’s only been 3 months – but talk to me in 6 months or 9 months and I maybe in panic mode. also am fortunate enough to have cash savings to last me a few more months
but today’s job hunt in this market is VERY different from any other time in the last 20 years
MM, a big change toward Cuba is on the way. Gradually, the Cubans are chipping away at their world from their side — they allowed tourism which is contact with the world at large, something which didn’t exist for 50 years. The contact with foreigners and foreign exchange has started its own little revolution. Fidel got sick and put Raul in power who has been pushing for economic reforms internally against Fidel, but Fidel’s illness shifted that. Religious worship is now allowed. And recently Fidel called for a journalist from Atlantic Monthly who wrote an article on Iran (nuclear program) to come visit him. The journalist was joined by an American Cuba expert. When asked if Cuba still believed that the Cuban model of communism should be exported, say to Latin America, Fidel replied No, it doesn’t even work for Cuba!!!
They recently approved limited free enterprise (a la Chinese model) allowing for limited private employment and profit.
On the US side, Obama is pushing for reforms and it is happening in steps. i.e. unlimited financial remittances from US to Cuba from relatives, unlimited relative travel and proposed legislation removing the travel ban for US Citizens. This is around the corner. This is a virtual removal of the embargo.
The biggest objection to all of this is the older Cuban American community (baby boomer age and older) who emigrated. They are still bitter. Their kids though don’t give a shit and are Americans.

“I’m claiming that attempts to repeat the mistakes of the past are impractical.”
Yes, that’s what your adversaries want, to “repeat the mistake of the past.” Sheesh.

I read that quickly. I read “i know my dykes ;-)”
Even Castro himself has backpeddled recently on what he said were mistakes.
“I’m not claiming my logic is “impeccable” by any means.
I’m claiming that attempts to repeat the mistakes of the past are impractical.”
Funny- you keep repeating them. You keep rewriting what people say and you insist on your version of life being the only viable one.
