my family always lived in poor urban areas. i can officially say i derived squat.

  2. You have a valid point there, Ishtar.

But I still don’t think handing every black person a check will solve anything. Then we have to separate the black folks of American origin from the Caribbean and other African Diaspora decended folk who were not directly affected by American slavery, and then decide how much to give people who intermarried generations ago, like the people in my family. Do I get a smaller check because only half of my family is decended from American slaves? By the time they figure all of that out, the lawyers will have made gazillions, and we won’t get squat.

Gotta run out myself. Be back later.

  3. My 88 year old father and I were discussing the mosque (…..ducking for cover…..) and hatred of Islam/ Islamophobia in the context of post-9-11 sentiment. Unprompted, he brought up the internment of Japanese-Americans as an example of what injustice we can perpetrate on innocent people when afraid and overly defensive.

Should I have said that? Are you going to beat up on my sweetheart father? In advance, bring it on. I’ll kick your ass (oh wait I am a lover of peace).

I usually escort him for protection (and not just because I have 1,000 condoms at home).

Why am I hearing, in the back of my mind, the song..”WE REPRESENT THE LOLLIPOP GANG, THE LOLLIPOP GANG…

  5. jessi’s right, and to tie it back into the Billy Joel discussion earlier. From “We Didn’t Start the Fire”:

“U2, Syngman Rhee, payola and Kennedy
Chubby Checker, “Psycho”, Belgians in the Congo”
