Biff, shocked about Hurt Locker…one of the most visceral, compelling, entertaining movies I’ve seen for years. Fact that it was directed by a woman makes it even better.
barf. those stereotypical white lady saving the day kinda movies are ridiculous and condescending
“my husband reads those Donald Goynes books- OY vey -the english language barely comes through in those books!”
Yeah buy Goines did it first and in fact he is well respected in the literary community.
Stephen King is also well respected, even tho he is populist in nature. He has written a book on writing. I was told that he is liked by African AMerican writers since he always identifies his characters by race. Don’t know if true or not…
Oracle Night is another one of my favorite auster books. there’s one called.. ugh, blanking on the name… something city of lost children maybe? something like that. that was also good.
Rob – There are no women in Hurt Locker….
When I was home on vacation, a friend and I went to the local karaoke night. I signed up to sing Tupac’s “Changes” and cockily assumed I’d rock.
The guy queued it up, the music starts, and then I FORGOT THE WORDS! The whole first verse, I was like, how does it go?
It is. It flashes across the screen,
SENDING OUT AN S O S
and eventually it fills up the entire screen, he sings it like 35 times:
SENDING OUT AN S O S
SENDING OUT AN S O S
SENDING OUT AN S O S
SENDING OUT AN S O S
SENDING OUT AN S O S
SENDING OUT AN S O S
SENDING OUT AN S O S …
Cupcake Brown is not a novelist, she’s a memoirist. As such her writing does not have to be polished, it has to be ‘real’ by today’s standards.
If you like her book, also try ‘gal’ by ruthie bolton.
Da kid is in a writers group, friends from her MFA class at the New School.

Thanks, IJ. I think the refrain in Message in a Bottle could be a real crowd-pleaser.
