“That’s wonderful for those folks allowed to pass through Ellis Island into this “beacon of freedom” you call New York City, but your statement is so damn dramatic I can’t take it seriously.”
You’re right. We are having an immigration debate in this country because people no longer want to come to this country. People wanting to come to America is all a thing of the past. You sound absolutely miserable.

your statement is so damn dramatic I can’t take it seriously. This city is no more of a symbol of what America stands for than any other major city.
THANK YOU ISHTAR! it is also no more of a symbol for what america stands for than any suburb, or small town or remote island that is part of america.
nyc is a festering shi+hole that only caters to the rich, pretentious hipsters and yuppies, and project dwellars. barf. yeah, real beacon of freed. more like the beacon of barf :-/
and dont tell me to go somewhere else, i aint going anywhere
NYC may in fact be seen as a beacon of freedom/all that America stands for – depending on your view. I’m sure many folks see it that way, but alas I cannot relate as my people where chained up and shipped here like cheap lead-covered Chinese toys.
Having expressed my undying love of NYC, it is not an easy place to live. It is extremely hard to come back after you have pulled up stakes and moved elsewhere, with the cost of real estate being a key factor. It is very very expensive. To live within a 40 minute commute from midtown as a theoretical place of employement is very expensive. It is very hard to get around. So by the time you have done all your hunting and gathering to make enough money to live here, enjoying all the amenities is not as easy as one would like.
This country’s dialogue has been hijacked by a bunch of religious nutjobs who weak, misguided and unable to search for truth.
A new poll out today. Getting a little out of hand, wouldn’t you say?

White House spokesman Bill Burton made the remarks hours after a poll showed that nearly one in five people, or 18 percent, said they think Obama is Muslim. That was up from 11 percent who said so in March 2009. The survey also showed that just 34 percent said Obama is Christian, down from 48 percent who said so last year. The largest share of people, 43 percent, said they don’t know his religion.
There are so many things/factors that make for high poverty density. The fact that the Bronx may hold the #1 spot is a shame, as it would be for any locale that would hold that position, and while it shouldn’t be ignored, that fact should not be used to say that NYC is a crappy place to live. I’d like to see us a city, state, country get to the point where we stop bitching about things and actually get up and *do* something to change the things that drag us down while also taking the time out to celebrate and promote what’s good.
**crap…that sounded really pollyanna, didn’t it? but I do believe what I wrote!**

11217, I agree with you totally!
BTW were you at Lot 2 a couple of nights ago? There were three dandies at a table outside, was wondering if one was you (one was Asian).

“Almost every person in this country can trace their roots to those who passed through Ellis Island because New York was the symbol of freedom.”
What about those with ancestry from outside of Europe?

Not very brave these days, Jessi.
