  1. Gem, just teasing. My hair lady told me that too – she just uses conditioner. Says that all hairproducts are water soluble, so what do I need detergent for. Maybe I need to do that. My hair is curly and Afro like in summer. Now it is the consistency of broom.

Does anyone remember the story about some woman begging on corners, but owned a luxury car and lived in a nice apartment?

I have no doubt that there are beggars who make a nice living at it. And I’m sure we’ve all heard the same story about a “temporary” hard-luck situation from the same beggar in the subway over and over and over again, well past the expiration date of said story. But that doesn’t mean that every beggar is a fraud, and of course we don’t have to give. It reminds me of Reagan’s welfare queen story.

If the beggar is asking for food and I give food and he turns it down, well then I guess I know that particular person is a phony baloney. It’s happened to me, but it’s also happened to me that the person eats the peach/orange/donut/bagel that I offer.

A while ago I had a friend who bought a roll of quarters every Monday and gave one to each person who asked, until it was gone. After that, he just said, sorry, nothing left to give. i thought that was a pretty good system-it’s really hard to be the judge. It’s hard when you have a kid, especially hard to define who’s a phony and why they would do such a thing.

  3. ditto what donatella said about cooking with eggplant! makes a huge difference when cut thin and pre-soak in salt and water. Before I started doing that, my eggplant was inedible. Afterward, delicious.

  4. Donatella – hahah, seriously I just rinse my hair every other day with conditioner – no need for shampoo. my stylist told me it’s worse for your hair than blow drying because it strips your hair of all the natural oil. Try it!!! – I have long curly hair and it looks better now that I don’t use shampoo
