  1. rf, like this woman on the 4/5 train begging for money to get back to North Carolina for months. She always had a kid with her. It had been a while since I last saw her, until yesterday. She popped up on the 4/5 selling candy. I guess that’s better than asking people for money. At least they’re getting something for their money other than the satisfaction of giving.

  2. Anybody who begs is in rough shape. You can’t analyze the nature of everyone’s disability but I actually need my money too. I do pay attention to people on the subway — sometimes people are really sick and nobody notices, but if you gave money/food to everyone who asked you would be in rough shape yourself. If somebody is a hustler trying to make money on the train, who cares. How sad.

  3. “A while ago I had a friend who bought a roll of quarters every Monday and gave one to each person who asked, until it was gone. After that, he just said, sorry, nothing left to give.”

Your friend must live in a sketchy area. I rarely get asked for money. Maybe it’s because I look like I have none.
