I met Faisal Abdul Rauf when he spoke at my law school on the 5th anniversary of 9/11. We were going to publish his remarks in issue of our law review but nobody else submitted a piece so we scrapped it.
I think it’s absurd to equate building a mosque in an area where TWO mosques already exist and allowing people freedom of religion with ‘oh no, we’re going to be under Sharia Law any day now”.
I just don’t see how you are making that mental leap, legion. I think some of your questions are fair, but most of your comments are just feeding into the fear-mongering.
The FBI does NOT have them listed as “honor killings.”
“While friends and family call the murders honor killings, it’s a label the FBI and local police have been hesitant to use.
In fact, 8 months after the deaths of Amina and Sarah the FBI added the words “honor killing†to their wanted poster but days later, removed them.”
No need to worry, we are not succumbing to Sharia Law. Even Turkey has been able to resist that.
Your questions are exactly the right ones Legion. I don’t know why France is having such a problem though I am sure it is exacerbated by the lack of integration of the Muslim population there into the general society — extremely high unemployment, for example. But I don’t think that you will find many Americans willing to condone honor killings but there is a lot of room in our world to give people the right to worship as they wish.
there are lots of women (and men) in park slope that i’d wish wore burkas sometimes.

Dave, no credit cards at Saraghina? My brother wants to take me out to dinner and that’s his requirement!
